Gamma-tocopherol

A vitamin E tocopherol found in foods such as nuts, seeds and vegetable oils.

Gamma-tocopherol is biologically active but is metabolised differently from alpha-tocopherol, the form used for EFSA’s AI.

What the form means

Gamma-tocopherol is a distinct tocopherol, not an interchangeable label for alpha-tocopherol. Food and supplement forms should remain explicit when interpreting evidence.

Forms

  • Gamma-tocopherol is a form of Vitamin E.

Gamma-tocopherol is a named chemical form within its parent vitamin family.

Worth knowing

  • A food tocopherol with its own identity. Gamma-tocopherol occurs in foods such as nuts, seeds and vegetable oils. It is a vitamin E form, but it is not a label synonym for alpha-tocopherol.

A closer look

More forms do not mean a proven upgrade

The body handles gamma-tocopherol differently from alpha-tocopherol, and supplement products may contain gamma-tocopherol, tocotrienols or mixtures. NIH ODS notes that scientists do not know whether these forms are superior to alpha-tocopherol in supplements.
